Hardy Annual
Description – Very pretty, fast-growing annual in bright sunny colours. Perfect for filling gaps in borders where they will flower in profusion. Calendula Summer Sunset are longlasting as cut flowers and the petals will add colour and a peppery taste to salads.
Sowing – Sow outdoors where they are to flower. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Sow 12mm (½in) deep, in rows 30cm (12in) apart.
Growing – When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 20cm (8in) apart.
Aftercare – FOR SPRING/SUMMER FLOWERING POT PLANTS: Sow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory in late summer/early autumn. Grow on cool in full light and water sparingly ready to plant out the following spring. The petals can be used as a substitute for saffron, added to soups, rice or omelettes. They also make a bright addition to salads. Write to us for a free leaflet with recipes for a wide range of edible flowers.
Flowers – March to September
