Half Hardy Annual
Description – This really is a classy choice for containers. Add a touch of elegance to your patio pots with the twinkling, star-shaped blooms of these easy grow annuals. Plants are self cleaning, meaning spent flowers will simply drop away to be replaced with fresh buds. Will flower from June to October, coping well with extreme summer temperatures.
Sowing – For earliest flowers from early June onwards sow September/October and over winter under glass, alternatively for flowers mid-late July onwards sow January to February. Sow on the surface of a 7.5cm (3in) pot of good free draining seed compost and cover with a very light sprinkling of vermiculite. Seal in a polythene bag and dont exclude light. Germination takes 10-28 days at 18-20°C (65-70°F).
Growing – Keep September/October sowings at 10-13°C (50-55°F) through the winter in good light and well ventilated. Water carefully so they dont sit in cold wet soil. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out late spring after all risk of frost has passed 30cm (12in) apart in a sheltered spot in light, well drained soil and full sun.
Flowers – June, July, August, September, October
